Goal: In my typography class, we had to choose a novel that we thought needed a cover redesign, then typeset the first few pages and redesign the cover. We also had our first taste of mobile design here and we had to also design a mobile book for tablet. I chose John Ajvide Lindqvist's horror/coming-of-age novel Let the Right One In about a boy making friends with a child vampire in 1980s Sweden.

Process: I really wanted to capture both aspects of this book with it's cover: the vampire horror thriller and the coming-of-age tale. It creates a strange contrast that was hard to balance. My first renditions ended up too bloody, while others were too subtle. I ended up on the current cover by using construction paper cut-outs to reference childhood. The stark colors and the slight spots of blood on the snow bring on the bleakness that the Swedish horror aspects present.
